Professor Peter Scharff
Peter Scharff (* 1957 – in Braunlage/Germany) – rector of Technische Universität Ilmenau – graduated at TU Clausthal as a chemist. He holds a PhD (1987) and his habilitation followed in 1991 in the field of inorganic chemistry. He worked as a visiting professor at University of Torun/Poland and was appointed associate professor. In 1999 he went as a C4-Professor to TU Ilmenau in the subject of physics. In the time from 2000 till 2004 he was head of the department of chemistry in Ilmenau and was selected as rector of this university in 2004. In this position he is till now. Peter Scharff was honored by TU Novocherkassk/Russia and by University of Cluj Napoca by a Professor honoris causa and Doctor honoris causa of Moscow Power Engineering Institute/TU Moscow – Russia- and in 2015 Dr. h. c. from Suceava University/Romania. Since 2000 he is a member of the “Akademie Gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften” zu Erfurt. In the framework of the “International Students week Ilmenau” in 2005 he was appointed as a chieftain of the Nigerian Igbo-Clan „Onwa N’Etirioha 1 of Ilmenau“ (meaning: moon that is shining for all – the first from Ilmenau).
