Professor Ir Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan
Professor Ir Dr Zainuddin Abdul Manan Zainuddin Abdul Manan is the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academics and International of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He is a professor of chemical engineering, the founding director of UTM Process Systems Engineering Centre (PROSPECT), founding Dean of the UTM Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, founder of UTM Sustainable Energy Management Program, and the founder of Optimal Systems Engineering (OPTIMISE), a UTM spin-off company. He received BSc from the University of Houston, USA, MSc from UMIST, UK, and PhD from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, all in chemical engineering. He began his career as an engineer in PETRONAS and Hume Industries and has been an academic leader, educator, researcher, consultant and professional coach for 25 years. He completed over 100 R & D & consultancy projects, has numerous patents and more than 400 publications that include 15 books/chapters, 200 refereed journals (Scopus H-Index: 31) and 220 conference proceedings on sustainable engineering of resources (energy, power, water, emissions & materials). Zain was the winner of Saudi’s Prince Sultan International Prize for Water (2008) and was awarded as a Top Research Scientist of Malaysia by the Academy of Science of Malaysia (2013). In 2014, he received the award as UTM Top Researcher, UTM Top Academician and the Pannonia Honorary Award from Hungary. Zain is a professional engineer, a chartered engineer, a certified energy manager, a registered electrical energy manager and the certified trainer for Malaysian energy managers. He has delivered over 300 invited talks in professional courses, conferences and seminars across the world, including the 2014 Imperial College Distinguished Chemical Engineering Lecture. Upon his appointment as the UTM Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and International (DVCAI) in 2017, Prof Zain instantly engineered the massive UTM Synergy 4.0 transformation program that involves the consolidation of 18 UTM Faculties into 7 Faculties based on UTM key thrust areas. UTM Synergy 4.0 fosters the UTM Teaching-Research-Innovation-Commercialisation (UTM-TRIC) nexus and creates a synergistic collaboration platform across UTM academic eco-system as well as its global stakeholders. UTM synergy 4.0 is ultimately aimed at crafting the UTM Blue Ocean Shift on widening access to UTM quality education across Asia with Its key programs that include future-ready 21st century innovative Engineering Education curricula embedding the 4th industrial revolution; nurtures future-ready graduates and educators, and promotes inclusive Trans-National Education (TNE) programs that advances the UTM-TRIC nexus.
